Suffering from cuts and wounds is an integral part of life and we all go through it, you definitely would agree that they take quite a long time to heal. However, there is a way you can speed up the healing process and that’s by using aloe vera. This has been regarded as a wonder plant for its awesome health properties by many. Our association with aloe vera goes back thousands of years when it was used for its effect on the skin and as the legend goes even Alexander the Great and Cleopatra used aloe vera for its alleviating properties.

Being a first class moisturizing agent is its first mode of action. For a wound to heal properly it has been shown that wounds need plenty of moisture, as opposed to dry dressings which often cause pain and disruption when removed. The goodness it contains and its moisturizing properties can be obtained both by local application on to the affected skin via cream or gel or it could be ingested via pills or juices for working from within.

It is normal for cuts and wounds to have inflammation surrounding the affected area and aloe vera with its magnificent anti-inflammatory property helps in the alleviation of the inflammation. This is an important part of the healing process and will certainly shorten the time it takes to heal, and will help to reduce any pain you may have in the meantime.

Lastly, aloe vera containing many specific nutrients promotes cell procreation and increases blood flow to the skin, which cleanses the skin of many types of bacteria. Additionally, depending on whether the wounds are an outcome of any particular ailment, it’s consumption improves the overall immunity of the body so that it is better equipped to combat any further recurrence of the medical condition.

Thus it is understood that aloe vera not only is the last word in treating cuts and wounds but it has additional anti-inflammatory properties, which promotes quick recovery. Not just effective at healing cuts and wounds, it is equally potent in treating some other types of skin conditions including acne, eczema and psoriasis. The benefits of aloe vera does not end merely with its healing efficacy, as it is a known anti-ageing herb and is rampantly used to alleviate pain caused by sunburns, so in case you are yet to try aloe vera, why not take a stance today?

Cosmetic surgery is a very popular procedure throughout the United States as well as in Europe. Popular figures such as actresses and models often undergo these procedures in order to enhance their appearance. If you are considering going under the knife to correct any imperfection in your body or appearance, here are some the common cosmetic surgery procedures and how you can benefit from them.

One of the most popular techniques in cosmetic surgery is breast implant. Also known as mastopexy, this procedure involves women desiring to lift and improve the appearance of their breasts. There are instances when it is partnered with mammaplasty, or the enlargement of the breast using saline or silicone gel insertions underneath the skin. Rhinoplasty, or nose lift, is another popular procedure in cosmetic surgery as well as tummy tucks or abdominoplasty.

Likewise, there are less popular cosmetic surgeries that people undergo as well. One of these less well-known procedure is sex organ transplant. Other less popular cosmetic surgery procedures include buttock augmentation (buttock enhancement), chin and cheek augmentations (face enhancement), rhytidectomy (face lift), and otoplasty (ear reshaping). In most instances, they are exclusively done for cosmetic purposes.

Liposuction, or suction-assisted lipectomy, is another popular kind of plastic surgery. It involves the removal of fat by a surgeon from the body of a person. On the other hand, collagen, fat, and tissue filler injections is another variety of plastic surgery that adds fat to a small area of the body where it may be insufficient.

Chemical peels are probably the least drastic among the cosmetic surgery procedures that are available today. It is designed to decrease acne, wrinkles, freckles, and aging through the application of acid to your face and letting the top layer of the skin peel and develop new skin.

Before taking into consideration any of the procedures of cosmetic surgery, you first need to consult your doctor. Bear in mind that not all these procedures are safe or effective for all people. There have been incidents of people who have experienced unsuccessful surgeries.

While it may be effective majority of the time, in the end, undergoing surgery can always be risky. In the end, it is all up to you to determine what procedure is best for you.

Smart Lipo is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is proven safe and acceptable by the Food and Drug Administration. Introduced in 2005, Smart Lipo was adjudged as a revolutionary method of surgery. It uses laser technology paving the way for a safer, cleaner, and faster procedure.

From pro bodybuilding to baseball, steroids have taken the world by storm. Everyone is trying to get bigger than the next person, and the health aspect of bodybuilding has been thrown out the window. These chemicals are used to make you stronger, faster, leaner in a short period of time. They promise the world, but in the end they fail to deliver.

From when I was in high school, I noticed football players and friends starting to use these illegal supplements. They would gain sheer muscle mass to the extent of 30+ pounds in a short time frame (8-12 week cycles). They could get all the girls they wanted but they were never happy. Most of them would only work their upper body and their quads and calves would be scrawny. They looked totally disproportionate.

Sometimes they would walk on their hands as a joke because they knew they were too lazy to work their chicken legs! This muscle mass would soon start to disappear rapidly, and they would start suffering from gyno (enlarged breast glands). They would get depressed and start another cycle, then another – it was an ongoing cycle. Some of them have to be on steroids for life because their natural testosterone levels are equivalent to that of a 100 year old grandmother!

I also noticed an increase in aggression in these individuals and lots of acne. One guy’s ears and jaw line got bigger as he was on human growth hormone which has bad effects on your cartilage. I could go on and on telling you about the many negative side effects caused by performance enhancing drugs. To those that use steroids, it is no longer about being healthy – it’s only about gaining that next pound of muscle. This is why I decided that I will never use steroids. My life is so much more valuable to me and I believe that natural bodybuilding is the only way to go!

Steroids have spread across the planet like a plague. My country of origin is Pakistan and even in Pakistan they are having issues with them! The big sport in Pakistan is cricket and Shoaib Akthar and Mohammed Asif, two of the best on the Pakistani team failed for steroids. I am not even going to get started at all the names of people who failed steroid drug tests in football, baseball and a lot of the other sports. Sure these “juicers” will get to be bigger than a natural athlete and maybe faster, but they’re always fighting to get as big as someone else. They will never be truly happy and content with themselves.

Now if you’re a natural bodybuilder on the other hand, you know the true meaning of dedication. You are doing natural bodybuilding for yourself and your own health. I believe that all players in all sports should be drug tested for steroids but this is just too expensive as these tests cost $700+ per individual. Since this is out of the question maybe a better monitoring system is to monitor players’ excessive changes in body composition over short periods of time. This is being done now and the rules are finally starting to get strict as they should be. I believe anyone failing this system should automatically be kicked out, no fine, just removed from the sport. I don’t think any professional athlete should be allowed to play in a sport if they are using illegal performance enhancing supplements.

The fashion and beauty magazines are full or articles about “cosmeceuticals,” a new kind of skincare product that they say provides clinically proven improvements for a host of skin conditions, from aging to long term exposure to the sun. But what exactly are cosmeceuticals? Do they really work? And how do you know which kind of cosmeceutical is right for your skincare needs?

A Cosmeceutical, first of all, is a formulation that combines the aesthetic benefits of cosmetics with the proven restorative effects of ingredients isolated by pharmaceutical scientists. And yes, they really are effective at improving a host of skin conditions, including those caused by exposure to the sun and aging. Cosmeceuticals comprise five basic categories: antioxidants, retinoids, lightening agents, hydroxy acids and botanicals. Being familiar with each is the key to knowing which is right for your individual skincare needs.

Antioxidants – Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Niacinamide
You know what happens when metal oxidizes – it rusts. Something similar happens to skin as it ages – it’s subject to oxidation from exposure to a host of environmental assaults. That’s why using skincare products with antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Niacinamide is so beneficial. Vitamin C is not only a powerful antioxidant but is important in collagen synthesis and as a lightening agent. Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant, is also known for its photoprotective properties; its ability to protect against UV damage has been the subject of numerous studies. In combination with sunscreen, Vitamin E reduces signs of aging caused by sun exposure. Niacinamide, a B vitamin, is used to treat rosacea as well as sallow, yellowing skin more prevalent in the Asian population. It is very safe and demonstrates a good patient tolerability profile.

Retinoids – Reinaldehyde, Esters, Retinoic Acid
Because of its strength and versatility, retinoic acid is the standard by which all other cosmeceuticals are measured. Retinoic Acid is derived from Vitamin A. You can find a variety of retinol based products on the market. As a group they are called retinoids, and in addition to retinoic acid they include reinaldehyde and esters. Most are topical formulations although oral retinoic acid is used to treat severe acne. Retinoic acid also has anti-aging properties. It can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and lighten hyperpigmentation associated with sun spots and age spots. Retinoids promote thinning of the outermost layer and increase regeneration of the epidermis. Side effects include skin irritation and redness. Other formulations such as esters do not have these side effects but are not as effective. For daily use, retinaldehyde must be both effective and tolerated. Use of retinoids must be discontinued up to a week prior to any cosmetic procedures such as lasers, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion. However, they can be used in conjunction with these procedures to enhance and prolong their benefits. In fact, retinoids can actually expedite healing.

Lightening Agents – Hydroquinone, Azelaic Acid, Kojic Acid, Vitamin C
One of the most visible signs of skin damage associated with aging and exposure to the sun is localized hyperpigmentation such as sun and age spots. A variety of lightening agents can reduce hyperpigmentation. The gold standard has been hydroquinone. Hydroquinone inhibits the formation of melanin, the pigment that gives color to skin and causes sun and age spots. Hydroquinone is available in multiple strengths, typically in concentrations of 4% in pharmaceutical grade products. However, due to its side effects of skin irritation and contact dermatitis, as well as potential mutagenic effects – the potential to cause genetic mutations – newer agents derived from natural substances have found their way into the limelight. (Hydroquinone has been banned in over the counter preparations in several European countries as well as Japan.)

These newer agents include Azelaic Acid, Kojic Acid, Vitamin C, and even botanicals such as licorice. Though not as powerful as hydroquinone, these agents don’t have its side effects and can been used every day. Vitamin C, popular as an antioxidant and for its role in collagen productions, also works as a lightening agent. Vitamin C is not produced by the body, and therefore must be ingested or applied topically. Often, a variety of these lightening agents are combined with retinoids and glycolic acid because they work synergistically to decrease pigmentation.

Botanicals
The largest source of additives in cosmeceutical preparations today are botanicals – extracts from plants, flowers, fruits, berries, twigs, and bark. They can be categorized into three basic groups: anti-inflammatories, antioxidants (see above), and skin soothing agents. Some botanicals also bolster the immune system and facilitate repair. Some commonly utilized botanicals include aloe, soy, green tea, gingko biloba, and witch hazel.

Hydroxy Acids – Alpha, Beta, Poly
You’ve heard about the corrosive effects of acid. So why do acids play such an important role in cosmeceutical products? Because these are natural hydroxy acids. Some of them – such as glycolic, citric, and tartatic acid – are derived from fruits. Lactic acid is derived from sour milk, and was used by the ancient Egyptians for softer and smoother skin. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that is fat soluble, and thus particularly useful for people with oily skin, as the oil absorbs the acid.

Hydroxy acids work by exfoliating skin – in this case removing the outermost layer. Glycolic acid, in addition to exfoliation, is also known for its moisturizing ability. Glycolic acid also stimulates fibroblast cells in the skin to produce collagen as well as hyaluronic acid. Both collagen and hyaluronic acid form the supporting structure of the skin, but the amount of these naturally occurring acids decreases in the skin as we age. Botanicals – cosmeceuticals such as these derived from natural substances – also work synergistically with other agents such as retinoids to provide anti-aging effects to the skin.

Cosmeceuticals can improve a host of skin conditions that other cosmetics can only cover up. But it’s important to consult your healthcare provider when considering cosmeceutical options. That’s also a good idea because many professional quality cosmeceutical products are available only through physicians and dermatologists.

The Prime Ingredients in Essential Aromatherapy: Don’t Stay Home Without ‘Em

“Physician, heal thyself,” the proverb instructs, as relevant today as 2000 years ago. Today we have more tools and techniques for maintaining our own health and well-being than ever before; and, as the cost of healthcare soars out of reach, preventive medicine and home remedies gain importance. The more we can prevent illness and heal ourselves, the more we can reduce the strain on the healthcare system, helping reduce the extortionate cost of medical treatment.

Essential aromatherapy stands out as one of the most effective and most widely neglected elements in our repertoire of everyday wellness practices. One noted naturopath points out, “Among all the natural healing practices to enrich and enhance our daily lives, skilled use of essential oils and fragrances certainly ranks as the easiest, least expensive, and probably most beneficial.”

The Essential Aromatherapy Essentials
More or less in order of everyday value

1. Lavender, uniquely feminine-The most useful, adaptable, and feminine among the aromatic essentials. Nature has adapted lavender to assuage, alleviate, or cure the vast majority of women’s most persistent, pervasive health complaints. Named from the Latin word for cleansing, lavender works wonders on skin and miracles on hair; in fact, many naturopaths strongly recommend lavender as a safe, natural alternative to harsh chemicals for the treatment of lice and ringworm. Just as importantly, lavender relieves and prevents urinary complaints while it promotes healthy digestion and circulation. Lavender also relieves stress and anxiety, and it numbers among Nature’s greatest sleep aids.

2. Chamomile, soothing as a lullaby-Sweet, vaguely fruity, chamomile, a natural tranquilizer, has grown exceptionally popular among makers of herbal teas because of its soothing and calming properties. Many women claim chamomile stands-out as the only aromatherapy essential effective against pre-menstrual symptoms. Women report chamomile not only relieves the physical discomforts of menstruation-particularly bloating and cramps; they say it also diminishes irritability and mood swings. Biochemists suggest chamomile’s benefits for women probably result from its exceptionally high concentrations of phyto-estrogens, the female hormones in plants.

3. Sage, opens the doors of perception-The indigenous People of North America exalted sage above almost all other healing plants, using it in all of their cleansing rituals and including “a good saging” among all their rites of initiation for boys becoming men, girls becoming women, young men becoming warriors, and young brides preparing for childbirth. Comparable with some religions’ last rites, saging rituals frequently prepared the elders for taking their places along the great spirit path. Piquant, provocative, and decidedly earthy, sage very quickly passes the blood-brain barrier, stimulating the brain’s right hemisphere, which regulates imagination, emotion, and the entire psychic register associated with mysticism and spirituality.

4. Patchouli, all-purpose skin care-Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and nutrient rich, patchouli ranks high on the list of aromatherapy essentials for all-natural skin care. Patchouli essential oil relieves skin complaints literally from head to toe, working well as an acne treatment, because it kills bacteria which contribute to break-outs, and working equally well as an athlete’s foot remedy, because it kills the athlete’s foot fungus. Just as soothing as it is cleansing, patchouli relieves chapping and eczema; and it works as well to clear-up oily skin as it helps restore natural emollients to dry skin.

Lemon: The Most Essential Aromatherapy Essential

As the legendary folk song goes, the lemon tree is very pretty and the lemon flower is sweet; the fruit of the poor lemon may be impossible to eat, but it makes up for its flavor appeal with its cleansing, healing, and energizing powers. As a general rule, lemon goes with just about all things aromatherapeutic, and innovative domestic managers have yet to find a household task that does not benefit from liberal doses of lemon. Lemon does everything from disinfecting your cutting board to removing free radicals in your vital organs. Just as your grandmother advised, “Pearls with everything, dear,” so Mother Earth counsels, “Lemons with everything.”

People today are known for their enjoyment of summer sunshine and evidence this enjoyment through deep, dark tans. Even those who do not get out in the sun much can have the look by visiting local tanning salons and many do just that.

Sadly, sun damage is the biggest cause of premature aging which makes the love of the sunshine a two headed coin for many. The best method to practice in anti aging is prevention, which in this case means to limit exposure to UV rays (sunshine).

Dermatologists agree that the sun accelerates the normal aging process and say that regular use of good sunscreen is the best way to help your skin retain its youthful appearance but not everyone does of has done this. The tanning craze during 1970 is showing us just what can become of us if we do not protect our skin and many of these people are turning to plastic surgery as an anti aging technique.

It is important to remember that. Although there are anti aging treatments through surgery, it is not possible to have the face you once had. You can correct the damage to some extent, which will make you look younger, but you cannot recreate the face you had when you were 20. However, your skin will look and feel much healthier, smoother, and softer through some very simple treatments.

Not only can overexposure to ultraviolet rays cause skin cancer, but it escalates the development of fine lines, discoloration (sun spots), and wrinkles. While cancer is based internally and may require more than just surgery, the other effects can be helped through a good plastic surgeon. These results will last quite a while as long as you take good care of your skin through a well planned anti aging skin care regimen.

If you have surgery to correct your sun damaged skin there are a number of possible procedures that you and your dermatological surgeon (plastic surgeon) may consider in order to find the one that is right for you. These procedures include:

Chemical Peels: chemical solution is applied to the face in order to remove the outermost layer of the skin, leaving the newer layer beneath is at the surface. This new skin looks much healthier and younger.

Dermabrasion: the upper layers of the skin are abraded (rubbed away by friction) with a special tool. This procedure is used mainly to treat scarring from acne but is also good for correction of sun damage because it smooths out imperfections in the skin’s surface.

Micro dermabrasion: the skin is abraded by minuscule particles shot through a small tube. The scraping away of the old skin through this procedure also speeds the growth of new skin cells because it stimulates the circulatory system in the area where the treatment is applied. Heavy sun damage is not helped much through this treatment, but if your damage is light or moderate you will find that this may work for you.

Non ablative resurfacing: this means that the skin is not pulled away from the muscle as it is in some surgical procedures. This procedure may be done with low temp electro surfacing, pulse light technology, and non ablative lasers; it is used to give new life to skin which has aged due to sun damage.

Laser resurfacing: the sun-damaged skin is vaporized a layer at a time to reveal more youthful skin.

Remember that having one of these procedures done will require you to take extra special care of your skin and you will probably have to be very careful about being in sunlight for a while after the procedure. Of course, caution where sunlight is concerned; to go out into much sunlight after one of these procedures in inviting sun burn, which is a major contributor to premature aging.

There is no question that water is vital to us as it is an essential component to life. It helps us in many ways from nutrition to the healing arts. This is nothing new since our ancestors have known this for thousands of years. So, let me bring up some interesting points that you may not be aware or key reminders so I can help you function healthier in your daily lives.

Did you know that newborn babies are approximately 95% water and this is reduced as we get older. As adults, we are about 75% water. Our bones also contain water which is about 20% and our brain consist of 85%. Our planet is covered in water and that is around 70%. So was that shocking news or what? Well, that may have been a surprise for a few or some of us that werent aware of these statistical figures. So, I’ve given you an idea of how water surrounds us externally or within our bodies internally. It only makes sense that water is a healing substance or an integral element in our daily lives since we and the earth are made of water.

For many cultures around the world it is very important and it is the meaning of life. They certainly knew the importance of water wanting to retain its purity. They are all correct since it is a source of life, healing powers, and meaning to some cultures with tradition. Healers in Africa store their water in quartz crystal. It is a small crystal of quartz that is cut along certain axes to be a vibrational or frequency level. Water is often used in many religious rites such as baptism or the importance of general bathing as a health practice for the Greeks. Some use water as a purification of sacred places. The city of Mecca in Islam has a sacred spring that every religious Muslim is supposed to stop by at this location.

Being Chinese I also began to research my roots over the years and we keep our water in jaded vases preserving the key importance of emotional, mental, and spiritual energies. Other cultures such as the Aztecs kept their waters in Obsidian jars. The, Jewish holiday Yom Kippur has some communities practicing of throwing their sins to the nearest body of water purifying and dissolving sins to begin a fresh new year. As well water has been an important part of ritual with washing of the hands with a prayer before a meal, fasting, women’s ritual baths. The Hindu text also discuss about the Prana which is seen as water for the breath of life. As well, the Hebrew letter Mem also means life, mother, womb, and sea.

An improper hydration is another factor or many of the diseases that we develop such as weight issues, skin disorders, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. By drinking more pure water it helps reduce many of these diseases by reducing the inflammation in our bodies. It will increase the antioxidants and boost the healing powers of water. As well, assist in balancing our hormones, neurological functions, and even control our mental and emotional state. Besides the benefits that water assists with our organs. It also contains no calories, cholesterol, fat and sodium is low. It is nature’s appetite suppressant as it helps the body to metabolize fat. Evidence has shown that low water intakes yield an increase in fat deposits. Conversely, a high water intake reduces the amount fat deposits. Also, the kidneys cannot function properly with adequate amount of water. As a result, some of the stress is directed to the liver, in turn preventing the liver from operating at peak levels.

One last note, water can definitely help those wonderful teenage or adult years? Well, what I am referring to is acne and it’s something most of us have gone through. Water is a detoxifier and it has the ability to assist in removing toxins from our body. Now let me ask you, are you are getting enough water on a daily basis?
