Some acne scars will go away by their self within a year of the acne lesion healing. The lesion will leave redness or pigment discoloration as it heals. If the acne was not severe or another lesion does not develop in the same location the discoloration will eventually go away in 6 to 12 months. It’s the discolorations or scars that remain after 12 months that are the ones that will only be removed by some type of treatment. There are some methods of repairing acne scars depending on the severity and type. A doctor would have to examine the scar tissue and proceed from there. Listed here are three of those methods starting with a procedure called Dermal filler. The material used could be fat, bovine collagen, human collagen, hyaluronic acid derivatives, and polytheyl-methacrylate microspheres with collagen. These are injected into the acne scars to raise the surface of the skin to make it look smoother. This is not a permanent fix and needs to be redone periodically The next method is called Punch Excision which means a round cookie cutter style tool is used to punch out a round section a little larger than the scar. As this heals it produces it’s own scar which will eventually fade away. On a really bad scar this method can be used with a graft of tissue from behind the ears. The skin colors may be different but this may be corrected later with other skin resurfacing methods. Last of these three would be Laser Resurfacing which would be done with a carbon dioxide or erbium laser. The laser is used to burn the surface of the skin to a precise depth. The skin will heal to give a new layer of skin. With proper care this procedure will give a new improved look to the skin.

There are ways to reduce or improve the acne scars. However, the severity of the scars will determine what you need to do to lessen them. For mild scarring home remedies and procedures may reduce the appearance of the scars. At home dermabrasions and chemical peels can alleviate some scarring. This is best accomplished by using products that contain retinol or alpha hydroxyl acid in lotion or cream based solutions. If your skin is sensitive then it would be wise to not apply the lotions or creams immediately following the dermabrasion or peel. This can lead to redness and some irritation.
